2415 Procedure – Credit Granted for Learning Experiences Conducted Outside of School

There are many ways in which students can learn and many sources for courses or programs. Students may transfer an unlimited number of credits from other Washington schools or district or accredited service providers (see types of courses or programs in 1 and 2 below).听Students may request transfer of a maximum of 4 classes (2.0 credits) from non-accredited, private service providers (see types of course or program in 3 below).听 Under exceptional circumstances, a student/family may appeal to the deputy Superintendent to receive more than the maximum 2.0 credits from non-credited, private service providers.

Students who wish to use courses or programs, including online or correspondence courses, provided by non-district sources to meet high school graduation requirements should carefully review the steps outlined below (鈥淓lective Courses鈥, 鈥淩equired Courses鈥) to determine the process to be followed.听Depending upon the type of service provider, students may need to demonstrate their knowledge and skills to receive credit for such courses or programs.

A request for approval of credit for out-of-school learning experiences shall be submitted to the school principal prior to the start of the activity, shall be at no additional cost to the district and shall include at least the following information:

A. The objective(s) of the program;

B. The teaching component(s) of the program, including where and when teaching activities will be conducted by school district certificated staff;

C. A schedule of the duration of the program, including beginning and ending dates within the school year;

D. A description of how student performance will be supervised, evaluated and recorded by the certificated staff or by qualified school district employees under the direct supervision of the certificated staff;

E. A description of how student performance will be assessed;

F. The qualifications of instructional personnel; and

G. The plans for evaluation of program.

The principal or designee will review the request and respond in writing. Reasons for denial shall be communicated to student/parent/guardian.
